Stained Glass Windows

A tour of the stained glass windows of All Saints' and St Mark's.

The windows were installed gradually.

The east window was the first to go in, during April 1889. Dedicated to the memory of Shepherd Smith, a past General Manager of the Bank of New South Wales (now known as Westpac). A copy was made for Grafton Cathedral. Made by Lyon, Cottier and Wells (Aust), it depicts the theme of the ancient hymn of praise - Te Deum Laudamus: "The glorious company of the Apostles praise Thee, the goodly fellowship of the Prophets praise Thee, the noble army of Martyrs praise Thee, the holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge Thee". The centre light shows the Crucifixion and Christ's victory over death. The lower panel shows The Last Supper. The upper foils Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, (Holy, Holy, Holy) and Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The other Chancel windows, all by Lyon Cottier & Wells are:

On the north side: Children borne to and from heaven.

On the south side: The road to Emmaus (Gospel of Luke 24:13-35) and the Children's Window.

On the north side of Nave (from the crossing back):

Scenes in the life of Christ, (by Lyon, Cottier and Wells)

Saints Augustine, Aiden and the Venerable Bede

The Miracle in Cana of Galilee (water into wine Gospel of John, Chapter 2 - by Philip Handel Snr.

On the south side of the Nave:

The four Evangelists:John, Luke, Mark, Matthew;

Saints Paul, Peter, Andrew;

Saints Patrick, George and Andrew

The last window on the south side depicts The Transfiguration:

Moses, Christ and Elias (from the studio of Morris & Co. artist Burne Jones, copy from a design in upper part of window at St. Cuthbert's Lytham, Lancashire)

In the Porch - on south wall:

"Why seek ye the living with the dead. He is risen." (at the Empty Tomb) by Philip Handel Snr.
